An AI connector is an integration layer that lets an AI system reach an external data source, tool, or API — a CRM, a product catalog, a search index — usually through a standardized protocol such as the Model Context Protocol.
On its own, a language model only knows what it absorbed during training — it can't see your live inventory, your ticketing queue, or today's prices. A connector closes that gap. It handles authentication, translates the model's request into a call the external service understands, enforces permissions, and returns the response in a shape the model can use. The payoff is an assistant that can answer "is the 65-inch model in stock in the Ottawa warehouse?" from real data instead of guessing — and cite where the figure came from.
Early "plugins" were often vendor-specific and brittle, needing custom code for every service you wanted to reach. Modern connectors lean on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that lets any compliant MCP client talk to any MCP server without bespoke glue for each pairing. That interoperability is why connectors have quietly become the plumbing behind agentic search and AI assistants — and why brands that expose clean, well-documented data are easier for these systems to pull into answers.
